Boots in the Hood

Maulin Landaeus has a prime location in Williamsburg right on N.6th off Bedford avenue. She opened this shop after having a successful stall in the flea market Artists and Fleas just down the block on 6th towars the water. I gotta say this woman can throw together and outfit. She has that impeccable swedish thrift, funky, cool look DOWN (I didn't get a picture of her as she is in Sweden at the moment). She is often around the shop to give her advice and suggestions of what and how to pair things. I have also been in there when scouts and buyers from Urban Outfitters are sifting through and bagging up her stuff to knock off and mock up. The thing is, the clothes tend to be very specific to her taste, with a whole mess of throw backs from the 80's that is all the rage with "the kids" today and that I for one just can't/won't rock. Her prices on some items are also to be questioned..... Just because something may be passed off (with the right flair and styling) as vintage Ives Saint Laurent, does not make it such. For example I picked up an interesting looking cotton tunic "y" top priced at $90 dollars that at closer look was French Connection from a few years back... Really not worthy of that price tag and it's not as if old French Connection can be considered a vintage "designer" piece. Having said that, I appreciate Maulin's eye and unique taste and think the woman looks flawless herself. And on an up side she always has a very varied selection of vintage leather boots in a large assortment of sizes. I have bought a couple of pairs from her before. Also if you are looking for something specific (ie: I was looking for lace up brown leather boots in my size) she will pop into her storage in the back and surprisingly come back with just what you asked for... I have seen this happen on more than a couple occasions. I am also fond of her large inventory of Erica Weiner Jewelry of which I think is really fun Erica Weiner Jewelry . If you're in the "hood" (Williamsburg) you may as well check it out. It's right by the L Bedford station.

Circa this Circa that Circa Now

One of my favorite shops, Circa Now carries new and vintage clothing, shoes and accessories for women. At first glance the selection here may seem limited, as the racks are not chock full of stuff. But once you have a look around you come to realize the beauty and genius of this little gem of a shop. All the items they carry are so carefully and thoughtfully selected that every piece that hangs or sits here is well worth it's worthy. I especially love their selection of denim and I always find a bit or a bauble that I can't live with out. They carry a terrific bathing suit line "Rockaway Beach" that is owned by a high school friend of mine and fellow native NYker. Way to represent! It doesn't hurt that store owner, Nicole is extremely helpful and sweet as pie! They also have a new shop called "Court" located on Mulberry that I will check out this weekend. If it's anything like Circa (which of course it will be) It will soon become another one of my haunts.

Celine! and NOT the Dion.

Phoebe Philo's debut collection for Celine! It was a sad day in "Tarynville" when she left Chloe in 2006. Now she's back! at Celine and once again working a bit of magic. These are some of my favorites of her 2010 Resort Collection.

Mina Sample Sale

Irene Albright, the curator of "Albright", the rental archive in Cooper Sq is having a sale. Ok, so maybe she didn't understand me... 'cause when I say sample sale I'm a talkin' $25 dollar Gucci, off season Ives Saint Laurent coats for $100... you know that sort of jazz. The Mina sale is not exactly that. If you are in the market for a beautiful Chloe/Marchesa gown marked all the way down to $750 then you should bring your stuff on down to the Mina sale. There is a beautiful selection of seriously marked down sample gowns and dresses. Some great designer coats. (I had my eye on a Marni trench) There is a rack of Olga Kapustina that is moderately priced at about $150/$170 that is worth sifting through. But what really got me psyched and the reason I would say to go, go, go check it out, is the insane sea of shoes all in Sample sizes, my size!! (read: big foot 39/40) Chloe, Marni, Allessandro Dell'Acqua, there all there and most of them priced under and around 2 honey. And to that I say ah yes! The sale is on till Sunday

Sample That

Wednesday night I went to the Gen Art "Shop NY" Event. Generally these things drive me a little nuts. Bright lights, loud music and lots of ladies running around in heels talking extremely loud. But my time was for a short while calmed and quieted by the beautiful jewelry works of Bliss Lau. Cool pieces of chain and leather done in a way that gives a subtle scent of S&M. Me "likey" much. They also have a fun collection of belts and handbags worth checking out.
